    2. School is vital for teen moms

    3. There are so many teen moms and teen dads in Korea and so are other countries. They are pressured by social stereotype. Even if they did wrong choice, we'd better help them than blame them. They have a right to education. If they study, they will be able to raise their children in better circumstance. The social efforts are very important for teens' future.

    4. A teenage single mother’s right to education should be backed up by strong guidelines that would guarantee those rights in order to break a vicious circle of poverty.

The National Human Rights Commission said yesterday that the right to education is a fundamental human right and recommended that related government ministries abide by a series of guidelines.

The guidelines recommended by the NHRC stipulate that diverse methods of education should be made available and that educators and government officials should work toward erasing the stigma of teenage single motherhood. To achieve these goals, new laws should be adopted, the NHRC said.

    2. Youth's sexual culture festival.

    3. I think this events are really good for Korean teenagers (Youth). because of the few reasons.
first, as everyone knows that Koreans are really old fashioned. but because of the globalism people started to change not just their thinking way but also behavior. being open minded. but elder people are not get used to with new culture from western. so it always make Korean teenagers to struggle with their parents. but like this events would help teenagers to understand, and learn what is right to do.
second, Parents are really shy to talk about sexual stuff with their kids. they just want to their kids to be child FOREVER. but unfortunately it will never happen. even though their kids are growing up, parents never being open minded with talk about their curiosity (mostly sexual stuff). but like this events will give them a advices and help them to solve their curiosity well.
and the last, because of this elders behavior teenagers don't know where to go, what to do, how to do. even culture is changing so fast. what I mean is that teenagers really need help and advices from elder people. but as I mentioned Korea is in middle of the transformation (about culture) so it make elders and youths to struggle. so if government offers this events much to our teenagers Im sure it will help our teenagers to think better way about sexual things.

-------------------------------------------------In Jeon-ju city. they had a festival for teenagers about sexual culture. 2010. september 18th Saturday. for help them to think better way about sexual stuff.
It was for teenagers to think about their right to sexual culture. they had 11 kinds of experience booth for learn and look around.
also they had teenagers performance, talking time, dance and so on.
KimXX said "becuase of this events I could learn more about our sexual cultures. and I also realized how important our sexual activity is."

    2. Youth unemployment drops.

    3. One of the important thing recently for me is hunting job. I'm a junior in university. So, I should prepare for getting job but as you know, it's very hard and competitive in Korea these days. I'm really worried about it. But I'm a little happy after reading this article but it is still hard to get a job. I think it is caused by that almost every high school students go to university. So, it is very lacking of employees in small company. Many students only want to go big company because they graduated from university. I don't think this situation can develop our society. We need to change our awareness. Some teenagers who only graduate from high school can live well than who graduate from college. I think professionalism is more important than diploma. So, I hope this society will be able to raise a lot of teenagers to professional workers.

    4.-----------------------------------------------

    5. Youth Unemployment Drops in August The job market is showing signs of improvement with a dip in unemployment among young people last month. Statistics Korea said on Wednesday that the unemployment rate among those aged between 15 and 29 stood at 7.0 percent in August, down 1.2 points from a year earlier. But the recovery was not shared by all young people, with the number of job holders in their 20s falling by 72,000 year-on. The wider job market posted positive figures last month. The number of employed people increased 386,000 to 24 million compared to August last year. The private sector added 599,000 jobs, although the public sector lost 214,000.

    2. purpose of education

    3. What's purpose of the education? for student's self-realization? ,for Spec? or learning? It's difficult to answer this question. but in these days due to many school that want much tuition, many students give up their studies. Even If their parents have no money for studying their children, is it desirable to quit their chance to study? We live in a society that restricts opportunity when someone have no money. But I think education shouldn't be like these society. Education shouldn't be industry.

    --------------------------------

    5. As higher education has become a seller’s market, the institutions in a position to do so are doing what comes naturally: raising their tuitions, and their admissions requirements, but at the expense of contributing to the national goal to increase college attainment. The result is that the United States is losing ground in the international race for educational talent, because although we have some of the best institutions in the world, the whole is less than the sum of its parts.
The increasing stratification of higher education is happening on the spending side, as well. As the selective institutions have become more expensive and less attainable, the rest have had to struggle with the responsibility to enroll more students without being paid to do so. Gaps between rich and poor have grown even more dramatically than gaps in entering test scores. While spending is a poor measure of educational quality, we can’t seriously expect to increase educational attainment if we’re not prepared to do something to address these growing inequities in funding.

    2. It's not a crime for teens to become pregnant

    3. pregnant teen girls in Korea usually expelled by their school. Not only It will take away a chance to get a proper education and job, but also it's sexually unfair. Instead of blame them, we have to give them proper sex education, so same thing never happens to other girls like this example of Thailand.
    -------------------------------------------------
The lives of many young girls are virtually over if they become pregnant while still in their teens. Aside from unfair social sanctions, they are also expelled from school, thus wrecking their job opportunities. Pregnancy doesn’t leave these girls much choice. Some resort to illegal abortion, regardless of how dangerous it can be, because they desperately want to move on with their lives.

It is welcome news that the public health ministry plans to give pregnant students the legal right to take maternal leave and continue their studies after giving birth. However, some critics have already aired concerns that the draft law will encourage young girls to get pregnant during their school years.

“Having a clear law on the issue may indirectly convince youths that it is okay to get pregnant during their school years,” child-rights activist Wallop Tangkananurak was quoted as saying on www.gotoknow.org website. But we beg to differ. And it‘s not a crime for a girl to be pregnant.

Without the law, schools will certainly expel pregnant students. Let’s face it. Thai schools are conservative and hyper-sensitive about teen pregnancy. We can readily tolerate corrupt politicians, but the controversy surrounding the bill shows that we treat teen pregnancy as a serious crime.

Whoever says the law will encourage girls to get pregnant does not have a clue about the factors behind teen pregnancy and the situation that pregnant girls have to face. Many become pregnant because of lack of proper sex education. Indeed, reports and surveys in the U.S. show that the number of teen pregnancies in the conservative “red” states tend to be higher than in the liberal ones, largely because of inadequate sex education in conservative states.

    Schools grapple with student violence

HA NOI — Rising violence in schools is being blamed on poor moral education and life skills by educational experts.

The announcement follows the death of three students and the serious injury to three others this week.

Pham Van Hoang, a 16-year-old student at Dong Hoi High School in Quang Binh Province, stabbed Vo Nhat Hoan, 16, and Cao Duc Son Ngoc, 18, on Thursday. Hoan later died in hospital the same day.

Meanwhile, Ha Minh Cuong, a 15-year-old student at Nguyen Trung Truc Secondary School in HCM City, was killed during a fight with a group of students from Go Vap District's lifelong education centre on Monday. One student was seriously injured and is recovering in hospital.

Last Saturday, Huynh Ngoc Thach, a 18-year-old student at Dak Song High School in Dak Nong Province, stabbed Nguyen Van Hai to death. Two other students were seriously injured.

In an unrelated incident, a video clip showed a group of students violently attacking a fellow pupil at Ha Huy Tap High School in Vinh City, Nghe An Province. It was posted on the internet yesterday. Nguyen Thi Ha Nhu was brutally beaten until her mother intervened.

"School violence is increasing at an alarming rate. It has little to do with individual aggression but more to do with rivalries among gangs who have dangerous weapons such as knives and swords," teacher Tran Huu Tru, a senior official at the Ministry of Education and Training, said.

Le Nguyen Quynh Thi, a lawyer from the HCM City Bar Association, said the law was too lax.

"Most students seem to have no idea about how dangerous getting in fights can be. They believe they are below the criminal age," Thi said.

He said schools had a moral responsibility to do more than simply expel violent pupils.

Vinh City Police said yesterday it regularly liaised with teaching staff and students at Ha Huy Tap High School in a bid to curb violence.

Police deputy director Tran Sy Phang said students involved in violence risked criminal prosecution. — VNS

    2. Students to be given say in education policy

    3. In the past, Teacher's authority was very powerful. I think, There were not exist private education. So public education and teacher were very important for students's everything. But These day, Many students take private education. They refuse the absolute power of teacher and school. That is natural. I don't think that fact is wrong. Students have a right expressing their thought. Although their opinion is not perfect, school listen carefully their sound. Education must exist for students. not teacher. So I agree students participate in the public education policy

    --------------------------------------

Students in Seoul will be given a say on the city’s education policies.

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will establish a students’ participatory committee to reflect the students’ feedback in its policies, Seoul Education Superintendent Kwak No-hyun said Tuesday in his report to the city council.

The committee will act as a communication channel between the liberal superintendent and the student representatives of local elementary, middle and high schools, said officials.

Regional students’ councils will act as the committee’s affiliated organizations and collect detailed opinions from schools.

The education office will also hold an idea contest so that students may initiate innovative education policies, said officials.

The liberal education head has vowed, ever since he entered his candidacy, to bring up students as active subjects in the office’s education policy planning.

The office also invited student panelists of various ages last month to participate in the anti-corporal punishment task force -- the most controversial issue in the education field since Kwak took office in July.

    2. Danger From Obesity In Adolecense

    3. Including me, maybe because of the effect from Western countries or maybe because of the other reasons, today many teens and adolecenses are crazy about meats and other low-qualfied foods such as ice-creams, hambugers and so on. That makes many teens in bad body shape. That shape also signs teens' bad health. Problem is teens can so easily access bad qulified foods wich cause obesity. I think rather basic prevention system which gets away junk foods from teen's life is absolutley needed.

    -----------------------------------------

Obesity is known to increase the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, a particularly aggressive type of cancer. But a new study suggests the risk is greatest among people who were already overweight during their teenage years or obese during their 20s and 30s.

Adults who were overweight as teens were twice as likely as similar adults who had never been overweight to develop pancreatic cancer later in life, and people who were obese as young adults were at more than twice the risk of adults who had never been obese, the study found.

''That's an important finding, because it tells us that weight control at a younger age is really important if we want to reduce the risk of this disease,'' said Donghui Li, a professor of cancer medicine at the University of Texas and an author of the new study.

The paper, to be published on Wednesday in The Journal of the American Medical Association, compared 841 pancreatic cancer patients with 754 healthy people matched by age, race and sex. Personal interviews were done to obtain detailed histories of the participants' height and weight at each age period, as well as information about alcohol use, smoking and family and personal medical backgrounds.

Smoking and diabetes also increased the risk of pancreatic cancer, with obesity accounting for 27 percent of cases and smoking for one-quarter of all cases. ''Diabetes is a risk factor, but even without diabetes, obesity increases the risk,'' Dr. Li said.

    3. I think Youth's location is getting higher. It means many people think that children and juveniles has important role for future.
Actually, thesedays many adult might think that juveniles are very rude and viorence. Because it has been many bad news on the mass communications about them. As this news telling us, they are very important to lead our counrty even world.
Now, youth are should think about their duty and responsibilities to peaceful future.

    2. selling sex on the Internet
3.I think those problem cause which their saying 'just corious' in teen age does not acceptalbe anymore. We should teach sexaul education in school or broadcast. Our society keep ashaming and avoding to talk about our sex life or sort of education. They have no place to learn about sexaul thing. It minght be the only textbook for them existed such as tabloid magazine or illegal internet site. That kind of commercial sex make them have some fantazy even more do(try on) something in real world. I claim that The education which didnt open about sex is the problem. Teenager is the time to learn about that. We should do something before worse thing happened.
    4. -------------------
5.An illegal paid sexual relationship is no longer just for an adult male sponsor and an underage girl, but vice versa too.

The Seoul police have recently been investigating the members of an online community which allegedly arranged paid sex between teenage boys and elderly women, said officials.

Most of the members were young men in their teens and early 20s, who posted their profile and contact number, selling themselves as sexual partners. The female “buyers” were mostly women whose ages ranged from late 20s to 40s, and many of whom were married.

The 17-year-old male high school student surnamed Oh who opened the website in March, said he was inspired by a popular cable TV program which dealt with a master-pet relationship between an adult woman and a teenage boy.

Though Oh denied having entered into an actual relationship via the website, officials suspect otherwise.

“Though the members did not often report on the website the progress of their meeting, we assume that many ‘deals’ were concluded by telephone,” said a police official.

The teenage partner would be paid a daily amount of 50,000-70,000 won ($43-$60) on average, according to officials.

“Those who have won a certain reputation on the website would earn up to 200,000 won per day, a pay considered quite attractive by teenagers,” said the official.

Should a female member be caught having sex with an underage youth, she is to be indicted on charges of violating the law of sexual protection of minors, just as a man would be in an inverse situation.

Under the revised law which took effect this January, adults may be punished for merely attempting to lure an underage person into having sex for monetary rewards.

Oh’s scandalous online community was not the only one of its kind.

The police have detected some 120 such websites and requested the Korea Communications Commission close down 14 of them, and more are expected to be added, said officials.

Nevertheless, numerous online postings of boys selling sex for financial rewards and of adult women seeking such boys may still be easily found on major portals.

Authorities have yet to face the difficulties of finding valid evidence to prove that sexual relations and monetary transactions occurred.

Some concerned observers, including parents of teenagers, also point out that Korean society is relatively lenient about the concept of paid sexual relationships.

“Even the widely used term ‘paid dating’ in Korean may fail alarm curious youths or adults,” said Kim Moon-sook, a 48-year-old mother of two teenage sons.

In the U.S., on the other hand, a paid sexual relationship with a minor is officially defined as statutory rape.

Also, officials only need to prove that the suspect did indeed have sex with an underage person in order to proceed with the charges.

“An increasing number of adults, regardless of their gender, are taking advantage of their financial situation regarding underage youths,” said a police official.

    2. Korean Teens Fall Prey to New Disorder Internet Addiction

    3. No one would deny how the Internet makes our lives rich , glamorous and convenient. However, there are many problems as well. Among those problems, I think this kind of young people's Internet addiction is the one of the most serious problems of our society. Every time I go to Internet cafe, I can easily see young children playing violent games with swearing. The thing is they don't care about other people even if they are older than them. Teenagers are mentally fragile and vulnerable. If they are exposed these kind of environment for a long period, it will damage both their mental and physical heath.

    --------------------------------------
In February, a middle school boy visited the I Will Center, a facility in northern Seoul established to help teenagers suffering from pathological Internet use, with his mother asking for help.

He is an Internet addict who felt restless, insecure and irritable when his mother tried to make him stop playing online games.

His mother was deeply concerned about her 15-year-old son, both of them asked not to be named.

She said her boy had not slept and eaten properly for three consecutive days and nights, playing online game all day long.

For the boy, eating regular meals was a waste of time. He ate only instant noodles to save time so that he could play games with his cyberspace buddies longer.

The boy's preoccupation with the Internet had serious financial consequences to the family.

Earlier, he used his parents' credit card without getting permission from them to buy ``game items.''

A month later, his mother was stunned after finding credit card bills ― she said the boy spent millions of won (thousands of dollars) to purchase the game items.

His pathological Internet use not only led to his academic failure, but also dealt a blow to his family's budget.

It gives a lot of information connected with what people are interested in, such as entertainment, sports, news, games and so on. So, It easily leads people, especially teens who are short of power of self-control, into addiction. I think Internet is seductive tool. But When it is presented for teens, guide line is necessary to right use.

The Ugly Side of Internet Power

``This boy was one of the extreme cases displaying the disorder that I have met here," said Kim Hyun-jung, chief psychiatrist of the center.

Kim, along with six other full-time psychiatrists, offers counseling services and coaching programs to teen Internet addicts at the center which is run by the Seoul metropolitan government.

Last December alone, they provided 1,718 teenagers suffering from Internet addiction with coaching and counseling services via phone calls or face-to-face interviews.

Kim said the influence of the Internet on secondary school students here is deeper and more widespread than parents may imagine.

``Last year, our survey of 600 students attending four middle schools in northern Seoul found that five out of 30 students showed symptoms of pathological use of the Internet,'' Kim said.

``I have no doubt that those teenagers' compulsive use of the Internet can lead to juvenile delinquency,'' Kim said.

``Our survey showed that the more they used the Internet, the more they became violent and aggressive.''

    2.Teenage suicide increases 50%
3.I cant believe that when i saw this article.
Teenage suicide increases 50%. It is really
big deal i think. Nowadays, Teenager have many
troubles. Of course, We also had many trouble
When we were teenager. I think, nowadays
korea teenager are really pity. Especially,
They received too much pressure from their
    family, or friend(violence things)
And I think, In an adolescent period, Family role is really important. They need just much of intention. Nowadays many parents are contributing to the family income, and many of family have troubles. Like divorce..or etc. So Many teenager dont receive intention from their home. We should care about them sincerely. Although they dont receive intention from their home, Society should care about them, like school. They just need intention.

    ------------------------

The number of teenage suicides increased by nearly 50 percent from a year earlier to exceed 200 last year, with many of the reasons unknown.

A total of 202 elementary, middle and high school students committed suicide in 2009, Rep. Kim Choon-jin of the Democratic Party said Sunday in his analysis report to the parliamentary education committee.

The figure is a 47 percent increase from 137 in the previous year. After slight fluctuations in recent years, the number of teenage suicide cases surpassed 200 for the first time.

High school students accounted for the greatest number of teen suicides, with 140 of the total. Middle school students and elementary school students made up 28 percent and 3 percent, respectively.

Kim urged that the government work out more sophisticated prevention measures, saying that no specific reasons were found in nearly 30 percent of the cases.

“A trigger issue prompts suicide in teenagers who live in a complicated situation involving family and school. Considering that 29 percent of the cases occur without the reasons verified by teachers and family members, more sophisticated efforts are needed for prevention,” he said.

According to his report, many of the teenage suicide cases, or 34 percent, were related to family affairs.

Other reasons included depression at 13 percent, frustration about school grades at 11 percent, relationships at 6 percent, disease or appearance at 3 percent and school violence at 2 percent.
